Islami Bank Rejects Cheque for Tk 548 Crore Withdrawal
Islami Bank Bangladesh today rejected a cheque from a relatively unknown company attempting to withdraw Tk 548 crore.
A Shariah-based bank official, who requested anonymity, reported that their Khatunganj corporate branch in Chattogram received the cheque from Top Ten Trading Company. The contact number provided by the company was found to be switched off today.
The attempt to withdraw such a substantial sum amid the ongoing nationwide turmoil raised concerns. The official stated, "We have rejected the attempt to withdraw the funds deposited with us as security against loans."
The official also alleged that Md Akiz Uddin, deputy managing director (DMD) of Islami Bank, and his associates were involved in the attempted fund withdrawal. Md Akiz Uddin did not respond to calls today and has been absent from work since Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on Monday amid escalating protests. Another DMD, Miftah Uddin, was also reported missing.
