The Israeli military reports that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has been killed in an airstrike in Beirut.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the death of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Hezbollah terrorist organization, following a targeted strike on the group’s headquarters in Lebanon on Friday.

"This is not the end of our operations. The message is clear: anyone who threatens the citizens of Israel will be within our reach," stated IDF Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, commenting on the successful elimination of Nasrallah.

The IDF carried out the attack on Hezbollah’s headquarters in southern Beirut, targeting Nasrallah. Initially, a Hezbollah official claimed Nasrallah was unharmed, but the IDF confirmed his death early the following morning. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, at least two other individuals were killed, and dozens were injured in the strike.

In a statement, the IDF said, "On Friday, September 27th, 2024, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader and one of the founders of the Hezbollah terrorist organization, was killed by the IDF, along with Ali Karki, Commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, and other senior commanders."

The operation was based on precise intelligence, and Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets executed the strike on Hezbollah’s underground central headquarters, embedded beneath a residential building in the Dahieh area of Beirut. The IDF noted that the strike occurred while Hezbollah’s senior leadership was actively planning terrorist activities against Israel.

The IDF further emphasized Nasrallah’s responsibility for numerous attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers, as well as his role in orchestrating global terrorist activities. He was described as Hezbollah’s central decision-maker and strategic leader.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin clarified that the United States was not involved in the operation, stating that Israel provided "no advance warning" of the strike.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who cut short his trip to New York after addressing the United Nations General Assembly, affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah. "As long as Hezbollah chooses the path of war, Israel has no choice but to eliminate the threat and ensure the safety of our citizens," he said.

After his UN speech, Netanyahu’s office released a photo of him in his New York hotel approving the operation against Nasrallah.
